Sean was nervous as we neared home. He tapped the steering wheel with his palms and whistled a tune, but I could tell.

I shifted, from where I slumped in the car. "What?" My arm throbbed, but I'd been told I just needed rest now. And I wasn't due for another painkiller yet. Really, I felt like I was making a meal of it, but the wound, small as it was, still hurt.

Sean would look after me, I knew. Probably more than he ought to.

He parked the car. "So," he turned to me, smiling a little nervously. "You said you missed Christmas. And maybe I should've gotten the okay first, but, ah, I went out and got a Christmas tree and decorated it, and…it's Christmas inside. If you didn't mean with me—if you just meant—" He coughed. "Well, I can take it all back out again, if you want. You can stay in the bedroom till it's gone. You should probably sleep anyway. In fact, you definitely should. I'll bring you something to eat, and you can get some sleep, and I'll take everything out."

I stared at him. "You made me Christmas…this quickly?"

He nodded hesitantly. "Is that okay?"

"It sounds…amazing." I picked my words hesitantly. "If I freak out and start bawling or something, I'll go hide and let you haul the stuff away. But otherwise…man, I'm really curious to see what you did. What, I just said that a couple of hours ago. You really went out and made Christmas for me?" I looked at him in awe and disbelief.

He nodded. "I'd do it again." He jutted his chin out, as if daring someone to challenge him.

"You look almost fierce like that."

"Thanks, I think." He gave me his quirky, sweet smile again, the calm one, the one that looked so happy to see me, so gentle-eyed.

"You sure I'm not…I don't know, jerking you around or something? I feel like I'm being a heel here."

He freed himself from his seatbelt, leaned across, and kissed me carefully. Then again, even more softly. When he drew back, his gaze was tender. He touched my chin with his thumb, gently, like he was drawing a line there, memorizing with his touch. "You'd only be a heel if you kicked me out of your life."

"I won't do that. I can't." I gripped his arm, staring at him, opening my mouth, wishing I knew what to say or how to say it.

He shook his head slightly, smiling just a little. "I don't want you to do that, babe. Don't try to force any words out. Do I look like Lowell? I need all your words? I'm a fucking wolf, man. I know I can trust you. I know you care about me. I know it in my blood. I'm good."

"You are." I smiled at him, eyes crinkling up in relief. My arm hurt, though. "C'mon, let's get inside and see Christmas!"

He laughed a little, like he was embarrassed and thrilled at the same time, ducking his head slightly as if to hide his goofy smile.
